2011 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport

Bugatti since 2005 has been remembered for one thing, it's Veyron. This car is an extreme example of wealth, good taste, and to some degree, wasteful luxury. 300 Veyron coupes have been sold to date and half that amount will now be made in convertible guise. A four door version with the same power and luxury is expected to be produced after the Grand Sport run is completed. Costing 1.35 million Euros or 2.2 million dollars Canadian, it is the most expensive car in the world, the most exclusive, and even the fastest most powerful street legal production car ever made.

As most of us already know, the engine in this car also happens to be the largest production engine ever.

- - - > 8 L W16 cylinder motor with 4 turbo chargers < - - -
 - - - > 1001 hp @ 6000 RPM < - - -
- - - > 922 lb-ft of torque @ 2200 RPM < - - -
- - - > 0 - 100 km/h = 2.5 seconds < - - -
- - - > 407 km/h top speed (253 mph) < - - -

I had to read those figures twice. Most people driving on our roads today could not even handle power like that. But it should be mentioned that most individuals who have driven this car find it surprisingly civilized on public roads. Harnessing over 900 torque cannot be easy, so kudos to the engineers of this wonderful piece of art. Even the tires which are made by Michelin had months and months of development, just to be used in this car. Costing $10 000 (figures Canadian) each, getting a flat tire with this exotic car is expensive business. I could easily purchase a whole car for that kind of money! It is interesting to note that there are only 2 machines in the world capable of mounting tires (when they need to be changed) to this vehicle. In Los Angeles is where 1 of these machines lives, and all tires are transported there for mounting, then back to the owner. On a different subject, fuel economy averages out at 22.4 L per 100 km mixed driving, an exceptionally bad figure for average drivers, but a walk in the park for whom ever can afford it.

Sporting a Volkswagen sourced 7-speed DSG transmission (Dual Shift Gearbox), this Bugatti has smooth, quick shifts, and paddles behind the steering wheel for manual shifting. Volkswagen owns this luxury brand and many others (Lamborghini and Bentley to name a couple), so I can't help but wonder if any technology from this super car will trickle it's way down to a VW model. Ok I went too far with that statement, but it sure would be nice you think? Back to the Veyron, a $30 000 sound system made by Puccini can push you right out of the cabin, but I would suspect most owners are delighted to listen to their 16 cylinder engine revv up instead.

This car is certainly something that jealous individuals love to hate, because they're too poor to own one, of course. The average human probably will not even make enough money in their lifetime to add it all up and afford this Bugatti. But sadly just about everyone reading this (including the writer) will be lucky enough to at least see one of these in our local neighbourhoods, and snap a shot with our cell phones. For anybody lucky enough to own one, or at least be able to afford it, you have no clue how lucky you truly are. In the meantime, if anybody owns one and is willing to let me borrow it for one day, please let me know, I promise to return it in one piece.
