Next year, something small is coming, and its name coincidentally happens to be "Mini". BMW (Mini's owner) will add a new vehicle to the line up only currently known as the Mini Coupe. Strictly a 2 door 2 seater vehicle, it will be the smallest mini when put for sale in 2012. This car was first seen as a concept (seen below) at the Frankfurt auto show back in 2009, also alongside a convertible version, which is also set for production.
When this vehicle is launched next year, expect it to receive the same 1.6 L 4 cylinder engines carried over from existing versions. It will put out anywhere from 121 hp to 181 hp, depending of course on variation of engine. A John Cooper Works 208 hp motor will also be available, making this little car one quick pocket rocket. Transmissions will be automatic or manual, both with 6 speeds, regardless of the engine selected. No official fuel efficiency ratings have been released for the Mini Coupe, however it will be similar to existing Mini models. Expect 6.8 L/100 Km city driving and roughly 5.3 L/100 on the highway. Both ratings are commendable, however keep in mind the premium fuel requirement.
As seen in the camouflaged picture above, this Mini will also be the first Mini ever to sport a rear deployable spoiler, which deploys at speeds above 80 Km/h. Adding extra downforce will no doubt help with rear grip, not to mention add to the 'cool' factor of this vehicle. Competition for this car will be coming mostly from the Honda CR-Z hybrid, Volkswagen GTI (in 3 door hatch form), and Volvo C30. Price-wise, expect to pay much more for this automobile than it is really worth. Only time will tell if this niche product will strike a chord with buyers.
