What are the first words that come to your mind when you hear "Jaguar"? Is it luxury, or is it performance? Is it prestige, or is it power? Is it royal, or is it expensive? How about all 6 of those in one shot? Jaguars XJ is easily all 6 of those options combined, definitely a masterpiece of engineering to behold. The new royal couple have been seen in one of these, they sure know how to ride in style, and stay true to their roots while their at it.
So lets get to the heart of this car and find out what motivates it. A 5.0 L V8 resides under the hood, and in 3 different variations. The first engine and most quiet one puts out 385 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. The second engine is a supercharged 470 hp unit with 424 lb-ft of torque. And the most subtle engine is an even more powerfully supercharged version, with 510 hp and 461 lb-ft of torque. No matter which engine you go with, power will never be lacking. As for fuel economy, anybody who purchases this vehicle honestly could care less about that. But if you really want to know, it does not matter which engine you go with, fuel economy is behind the competition in all of them. Perhaps this is a trait left behind from previous owner Ford. This is a luxury sports sedan, even equipped with paddle shifters behind the steering wheel to prove the point. (Look closely at the picture below to verify)
Now the luxury of this vehicle is no less decadent than its engines. Features include dual zone automatic climate control, navigation, digital instrument display, leather throughout the cabin, chrome accents, and even a 1200 watt Bowers and Wilkins audio system with 20 separate speakers. The supercharged models come with 20 inch "dubs", or wheels while the basic version is equipped with 19 inchers. This vehicle is supposed to appeal to the younger generation of buyers, which is the reason for including some of the above listed options. Although I cannot understand Jaguars reasoning as this car is simply affordable to anyone who has spend an entire lifetime working.
The Jaguar XJ is said to be a very smooth vehicle, and at the same time deliver a decently sporty ride, when the desire kicks in. Equipped with large brakes, and mostly aluminum assembly, weight is not a serious issue, however should you get behind the wheel of one of these, remember it is still classified as a large car, so in other words check your blind-spot, twice. Competition for this beast comes from the Audi A6 (honestly a better car), Mercedes Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series, Maserati Quattroporte, and Lexus GS 460. The Jaguar holds its own very well, and it really does have stand-out style that the BMW and Lexus are lacking. So really it comes down to personal preference. Do you want to own classic British luxury, or is German performance your goal, maybe its Japanese elegance. Whatever floats your boat, if this becomes your next car, your neighbours will be jealous at the end of the day. Isn't that why we purchase luxury brands in the first place?
