We made our return trip in an automatic-equipped car. Called Sky-Drive, the new six-speed features more aggressive torque-converter lockup to provide better fuel economy and emulate the direct-shifting feel of a dual-clutch or manual transmission. To mask the added shift shock, Mazda has switched from a single-plate to dual-plate clutch and the damper features larger, less rigid springs. Aside from the occasional abrupt one-to-two shift, the gearbox provides quick, yet unobtrusive gear changes. A few times, we would have liked the transmission to downshift earlier on deceleration, but instead we were given a late shift right as the right foot moved back to the gas. There's a manual shift mode, but the calibration isn't quite right as there's a long pause between tapping the shifter and feeling the downshift. Mazda says that the logic hasn't been finalized, though. The company will also have the ability to offer paddle shifters in the next 6, though it's not clear if the diesel car will offer them.

Celebrate diesel diversity
Paddle shifters are a minor detail in the bigger picture here. Mazda's gamble -- and diesel is still a large gamble in the U.S. -- rewards buyers with what should be an affordable, fuel-efficient, and entertaining car. The Sky-D also offers enthusiasts another option in the extremely limited diesel market. With such a compelling character, we hope Mazda's 2012 diesel can convince buyers -- and other automakers -- that diesel engines deserve a bigger role in America.

2012 Mazda 6 is a four door sports sedan or a five door hatchback. Both come in two versions “I” and “s” . While the car is available in four models, Sport, Sport Value Edition, Touring and Grand Touring and the hatchback is available in Sport Value Edition, Touring and Grand Touring models. All models are equipped with a front wheel drive. The I version is powered by a 2.3 Liter engine having four cylinders and is rated at 156 horsepower and 154 pound feet of torque. The S version is powered by a 3.0 Liter V6 engine that is rated at 212 horsepower and 197 pound feet of torque. The Sport model is equipped with a five speed manual transmission, while the Sport Value Edition is equipped with a five speed automatic transmission. The Touring and Grand Touring models are equipped with a six speed automatic transmission.

The Mazda 6 Sport Value model has a driver’s seat that is powered and can be adjusted in eight different ways, a steering wheel that is wrapped in leather and a CD player that is located in the dashboard. When Mazda introduced the Shinari concept at the 2010 L.A. Auto Show way back in December, it signaled a strong directional change. The Shinary Concept was pretty sexy, it was more of a Lexus competitor than to the Altima and Camry. And it will go on sale this December with less of its show-car edge and as the 2012 Mazda6. But rumors said that the new Mazda6 will sport an unconventional 2.2-liter diesel having 310 lb-ft of torque and with a 40-plus mpg highway rating. The beast’s free-revving, 5200-rpm redline is especially new for diesels, but what Mazda really wanted was to emulate the true character of its gasoline-powered cars. So this twin-turbocharged diesel car may not be new to buyers who are familiar with Mazda’s quick-revving gas motors. Expect Mazda to offer a more elegant interior too. If Mazda can make all of these a success, they will make a good competition with the German Motors and Japanese Designs.

The engine is everything in the Mazda6, and, when mated to the five-speed manual shift systems, the car's available four-cylinder and V-6 engines offer something for everyone. The V6 engines boast 220 horsepower, and feature magnesium headcovers, strengthened headcase covers, block-mounted auxiliary equipment, and variable valve timing. The result? More efficient power and greatly reduced vibration and noise.
